Happy Canada Day from Halifax, NS

Happy Canada Day!

Spent a glorious sunny and breezy Canada Day weekend in Halifax, which was so charming in the way it was like the Canada I remember growing up in Toronto in the 60s. It’s so quiet and nothing really seems to be going on–there are like three people on the street and my daughter Sophie, who is living and working there this summer, seems to know all of them.

Since almost everything was closed for Canada Day we took a road trip up to the Annapolis valley and the Bay of Fundy which turned out to be just beautiful, with its red dirt and sleepy little towns. We happened on one completely adorable spot which seemed straight out of Local Hero, the Nova Scotia version: a tiny hamlet called Hall’s Harbour with a general store selling dulse and a lobster shack on the water overlooking all the fishing boats.

And then, after we stuffed ourselves with lobster, we headed back to Halifax just  in time to catch the Canada Day concert on the harbour.

Turns out he is a local hero: everyone in the crowd seemed to know every word of his songs. And some fans really got into it.

Just like a waving flag

My own contribution to the festivities was to be a guest blogger for the Dwell studio site on Canada for Canada Day. You can check it out at   http://www.dwellstudio.com/blog.
